  1. Did you watch the second episode of 'Star Trek: Discovery'? Or just the first?

    Blog

CBS finally, finally, finally premiered its long-awaited new Star Trek series Discovery on Sunday night, albeit a bit delayed after 60 Minutes.

It also spent a whole lotta commercial time reminding you that the second episode is currently available on CBS All Access, the network's streaming service on which all future episodes will premiere in the United States (other countries get it on Netflix). The show also very blatantly ended on a tense moment in the hopes of sending fans online to resolve it....

    Events

Maybe you've been here your whole life and done absolutely everything — been to every beach, art museum and local music hangout. Kudos to you, superhuman.

But more likely, you're like me, and you've been in Tampa Bay for a handful of years without going to some of the "staples" that we always hear about. You know what I'm talking about. We all have those handful of places that we've never been, always on the edge of our minds. I read about some of them every week right here in Weekend....

  5. J.J. Abrams is going to write and direct 'Star Wars: Episode IX'

    Blog

A week after announcing original Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow had been fired, Disney announced today that J.J. Abrams is being brought in to write and direct the Star Wars installment.

Abrams co-wrote and directed Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which relaunched the series in 2015.

"With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement....

  6. Hey, Disney: 9 Bollywood actresses who could play Jasmine

    Blog

News broke this week that Disney is having a hard time casting the stars of its live action Aladdin. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the studio and director Guy Ritchie (yes, here is your reminder that the guy recently behind the disastrous King Arthur movie has been entrusted with a Disney classic) have been searching for "a male lead in his 20s who can act and sing ... of Middle-Eastern or Indian descent." Reportedly the obvious names of Brits Dev Patel and Riz Ahmed are among those considered for the role. But still, in months of casting call tests, no one has been chosen. I had a few suggestions from Bollywood....

  13. Well, yes, Netflix's new 'Anne With an E' (of Green Gables) is ... different

    Blog

Let's get this out of the way: Netflix's new adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, puzzlingly called Anne With an E, is not like the Annes you've seen before.

The latest version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 book, releasing seven episodes Friday on Netflix after airing on Canada's CBC, comes from Moira Walley-Beckett, a writer for Breaking Bad who won an Emmy for penning "Ozymandias." And if you are the kind of person who reads "Breaking Bad + Anne of Green Gables" and thinks ‘YES,' this series is for you....

  14. So, how Irish are you? Tell a family story this St. Patrick's Day

    Pop Culture

    How Irish are you?

The answer this week is probably "very," especially if you enjoy green beer and outrageous amounts of corned beef and cabbage. But it's also possible you're a good bit Irish year-round, given that Irish is the second most common ancestry among Americans, according to the Census Bureau. (Edging it out at No. 1 is German, which you might've guessed in Oktober. We Americans do like to claim some heritage, especially when it involves beer.)...

  15. Column: Come one, come all geeks to 'Game of Thrones' orchestra performance

    Music & Concerts

I wouldn't consider myself an orchestra fan, but I would call myself a geek.

Last year, I went to a concert experience called Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage at Ruth Eckerd Hall. It was a lot less theatrical than the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience at Amalie Arena this weekend sounds like it will be (pyrotechnics!), but the premise is the same. It featured a live orchestra playing the music of Star Trek while videos of the franchise's iconic moments played on a screen. ...

The Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience comes to Tampa’s Amalie Arena on Sunday.
