Art Planner: Get It Together and Fourth Fridays Tampa

See What's up: Get it Together

Illsol Art Space is a brand new gallery in Tampa's Seminole Heights, opened by artists and spouses Michelle Sawyer and Tony Krol. The duo work on large installations and murals in Tampa, including Dream Pushers near La Segunda Bakery. In Illsol, they've created an artist-run space that gives local artists a place to show alongside national and international ones. Their debut exhibition, "Get It Together," opens Friday and includes many of the local art scene's heavyweights, including Bask, Tes One, Chris Parks, Phil Holt and Chad Mize. There are a few artists from outside this area, including Miami-based Brian Butler, whose homage to miniature golf is pictured. Butler is a designer and illustrator who counts the Wu Tang Clan and Jay Z as clients. The free opening reception is from 6-11 p.m. Friday at 2744 N Florida Ave. (813) 586-4765. illsol.com.

Discover culture: Fourth Fridays Tampa

Downtown Tampa's Fourth Friday event is this week and, as usual, there are many interesting happenings at the participating venues. The concept is much like other art walks, in which galleries and museums extend hours, reduce admission, and offer special programs. Here are a few art highlights of this month's event:

At the TECO Public Art Gallery, artist Beth Kokol will give a Talk and Tour of her first solo exhibition in Tampa, titled "Indigo Blue." Kokol, who was named Best Local Artist in 2016 by Creative Loafing, works in painting and mixed media, sometimes incorporating papyrus paper and bits of fabric in her work. The free event is from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at 702 N Franklin St.

The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts always has interesting guest speakers, like photographer Chris Buck, who will discuss his book Uneasy: Portraits From 1986-2016. Buck's portraits of celebrities, including Joaquin Phoenix, Lena Dunham and the late Dennis Hopper, often have a warped sense of reality. Admission is pay what you can, 6-8 p.m. at 400 N Ashley Drive, Cube 200. fmopa.org.

    Sometimes, the more time you have with a project, the more complicated it gets. I started hearing about Mortar & Pestle in Seminole Heights about 18 months ago. It was the vision of Ujwal Patel, a pharmacist;
