Times food critic Laura Reiley named a James Beard award finalist for Farm to Fable series

The Tampa Bay Times' series Farm to Fable was named a finalist in the 2017 James Beard Media Awards, announced Wednesday in Los Angeles during a breakfast at a.o.c.

Times food critic Laura Reiley, along with features editor Stephanie Hayes, is one of three finalists in the Food Reporting category. The other two are the Associated Press' Martha Mendoza and Margie Mason for their Exploited in Paradise series and Emma Beals for her three-part series on Syrian Wheat as a Weapon of War, which appeared on Munchies, a food website from the publication Vice.

The awards gala, hosted by James Beard award winner Andrew Zimmern, will be held April 25 at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in New York City.

The media awards (formerly known as the Book, Broadcast & Journalism Awards) honor the nation's top cookbook authors, culinary broadcast producers and hosts, and food journalists.

Farm to Fable is a multipart series published in 2016 that exposed misrepresentations about food's provenance in Tampa Bay restaurants and farmers' markets.
