MOSI, SPC, libraries offer safe solar eclipse viewing Monday

RECOMMENDED READING

If you couldn't score some of the hard-to-find eyewear that will let you watch Monday's solar eclipse, have no fear, there are safe viewing choices across the Tampa Bay area.

In the Tampa Bay area, the moon will be blocking more than 80 percent of the sun from 1:17 p.m. until 4:14 p.m. with maximum coverage taking place at 2:49 p.m. It won't get dark like it will in the swatch of the country in the zone of totality. So you will need special eyeglasses or a pinhole projector to look at the eclipse safely.

Here are your choices Monday all starting at 1 p.m.

Museum of Science and Industry: View the eclipse through telescopes fitted with solar filters and a live stream video of the event from NASA. 4801 E Fowler Ave., Tampa.

St. Petersburg College: Telescopes with solar filters will be set up in the quad area of the campus, east of the Natural Science building, near the West St. Petersburg Library. 6605 Fifth Ave. N.

Sundial Solar Eclipse Viewing Party: Free solar eclipse viewing glasses to the first 200 people at this party with NASA's live stream playing on video boards. NOMAD Art Bus will be on site helping people make pinhole projectors. Bring boxes similar to cereal boxes. 151 Second Ave. N, St. Petersburg.

Libraries with limited glasses available

• 78th Street Community Library, 7625 Palm River Road, Tampa. Bring a box to make a pin-hole projector.

• Clearwater East Library, 2251 Drew St., Clearwater. 2 p.m., 2251 Drew St., Clearwater.

• Clearwater Main Library, 100 N Osceola Ave. NASA Eclipse 2017 live stream inside the library.

• Countryside Library, 2642 Sabal Springs Drive, Clearwater; NASA live stream.

• North Greenwood Library, 905 N Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Clearwater. A solar filter equipped telescope will be set up and a live stream will be shown inside the library.

• Seminole Community Library, 9200 113th St. N, Seminole.
