Heisman jinx? Louisville's Lamar Jackson isn't fazed (w/ video)

RECOMMENDED READING

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Louisville QB Lamar Jackson didn't start last year aiming to win the Heisman Trophy.

"I didn't think I would win the Heisman Trophy," Jackson said during Thursday's ACC kickoff. "It just happened."

Maybe that's why Jackson isn't worried about it happening again. Ohio State running back Archie Griffin remains the only two-time Heisman winner — a point Griffin has already made to Jackson — and previous Heisman winners (including Florida State's Jameis Winston) regressed the next season.

"You've got to play harder this year," Jackson said Griffin told him, "because they're going to be coming after you."

Jackson and the Cardinals have some changes in mind to prepare for that.

Coach Bobby Petrino said Jackson worked under center a lot this spring instead of the shotgun for a few reasons. It will help prepare Jackson for the NFL and relieve some pressure on him by giving Louisville more running options.

"I think it'll help us be a harder team to defend," Petrino said.

Heisman regression

How returning Heisman winners fared the year after winning the award:

2010: 875 rushing yards, 13 TDs; 282 receiving yards, 1 TD

Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel

2012: 3,706 passing yards, 26 TDs, 9 INTs; 1,410 rushing yards, 21 TDs

2013: 4,114 passing yards, 37 TDs, 13 INTs; 759 rushing yards, 9 TDs

Florida State QB Jameis Winston

2013: 4,057 passing yards, 40 TDs, 10 INTs; 219 rushing yards, 4 TDs

2014: 3,907 passing yards, 25 TDs, 18 INTs; 65 rushing yards, 3 TDs

Louisville QB Lamar Jackson

2016: 3,543 passing yards, 30 TDs, 9 INTs; 1,571 rushing yards, 21 TDs

ACC Network update

Despite cord-cutting damage to ESPN's bottom line, ACC commissioner John Swofford remains optimistic about ESPN launching the ACC Network in two years.

Swofford, who announced the network a year ago at this event, said the network is on schedule in most areas and ahead of it in the rest. He also said some of the business aspects of launching a cable network during the nationwide trend of cord-cutting remain a "work in progress."

Quick hits

It's not a surprise, but Jackson said he started to hear a lot more Heisman chatter last season after Louisville's 63-20 demolition of FSU. … FSU safety Derwin James on five-star DT Marvin Wilson: "Oh my gosh, he's a real freak of nature. He's a man." … Fisher wants the ACC to give all of its rivalry games (like FSU-Clemson and FSU-Miami) fixed weekends every year.
