NASCAR says no to Carl Long's vaping logo

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Carl Long was forced to strip the logo of Colorado-based marijuana vaping company Veedverks from his car Friday after NASCAR said it violated rules governing sponsorship and paint schemes.

The logo was plastered on Long's green and yellow No. 66 for tech inspection, but a NASCAR spokesman said it was never vetted and approved. And when officials learned of the hood logo, they had crew members remove it before the car went to the track.

Long returned to NASCAR's top series this weekend after an eight-year banishment over an unpaid fine from a rules infraction earlier in his career.

Ryan Blaney earned his first career pole for tonight's Go Bowling 400 at Kansas Speedway, taking advantage of a traffic jam at inspection that kept 11 cars from getting on the track.

Among those who failed to get through were Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Clint Bowyer and Kasey Kahne. That left only 28 cars eligible to contest the first round of qualifying.

Joey Logano starts second and Martin Truex third, while the drivers who failed to get through inspection will have to start at the back of the field based on points.

NASCAR vice president of competition Scott Miller blamed the teams: "It's fairly disappointing that they can't present their cars to pass inspection."

INDYCAR: Will Power won the pole, setting a qualifying record for the IndyCar Grand Prix in Indianapolis. The Australian completed the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course in 1 minute, 7.7044 seconds. Helio Castroneves was second at 1:08.1169. St. Petersburg resident Sebastien Bourdais was sixth.

FORMULA ONE: Fernando Alonso's first lap of practice for the Spanish Grand Prix ended in smoke and a pool of engine fluid in Montmelo, Spain. White smoke enveloped Alonso when his McLaren spun out and into the gravel in the morning session at the Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya. Alonso blamed Honda, which made the motor. The engine was changed out, and he had the afternoon's slowest time, more than three seconds behind pacesetter Lewis Hamilton.
