Pinellas deputies: 1-year-old hospitalized after ingesting Xanax

Montes

CLEARWATER — Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man over the weekend after investigators said a 1-year-old child in his care ingested Xanax.

According to deputies, Oscar Montes was watching the child on Saturday in unincorporated Clearwater when he found and ingested an unknown amount of Xanax, a sedative used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.

The child became lethargic, according to Montes' arrest report. He was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, where a urine test turned up positive for presence of the drug.

Deputies arrested Montes on a child neglect charge Saturday and booked him into the Pinellas County Jail. He was released later that day after paying $5,000 bail.

Montes and the child are family members, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Spencer Gross.

Hillsborough County School District students do not want to hear that their buildings are decrepit. They do not want to hear that Florida's legislators are complicit. Superintendent Jeff Eakins and the current Hillsborough County School Board did not create this air conditioning mess, but they own it now.
