Two luxury resort employees were killed on Longboat Key early Friday, according to police.
Investigators released few details, but said the workers — Kevin Carter, 51, of Bradenton, and Timothy Hurley, 59, of Sarasota — were killed around 2:45 a.m. at the Zota Beach Resort along the Gulf of Mexico. Chief Peter A. Cumming said it appeared to be an attempted robbery turned homicide against Carter, a security guard, and Hurley, a front desk manager.
Cumming said the crime is likely an isolated incident.
"We are collecting evidence; we're following leads," Cumming said to reporters at the scene. "I don't have concerns for residents and visitors on the island based on this incident."
Police said they are working to collect evidence and examine the resort's security footage.
The Manatee County Sheriff's Office, which is assisting with the investigation, released some surveillance video Friday afternoon showing a man suspected in the attack entering the hotel, which just opened last month.
