Tampa motorcyclist dies in Bearss Avenue crash

TAMPA — A motorcyclist died Friday night after an accident on Bearss Avenue, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Just after 7 p.m., Geoffrey B. Dawson, 25, of Tampa, was driving a 2006 Honda CBR 1000 west on Bearss Avenue at a high rate of speed, weaving in and out of traffic, deputies said.

At the same time, Catherine Nicholas, 27, of Brandon, was turning left at the intersection of Lake Emerald Boulevard. She did not see Dawson approaching, deputies said.

Dawson struck the front of her 2012 Ford Focus and was ejected about 50 feet, deputies said. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he later died.

Dawson was a volunteer responder for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, deputies said.

Nicholas and her 31-year-old passenger were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with minor injuries.
