    BROOKSVILLE — The typical budget battle between the Hernando County Commission and Sheriff Al Nienhuis has largely been averted this summer, except for a dust-up over how the sheriff has accounted for federal inmate money. But a minor skirmish did break out this week.

    Hernando County Commission Chairman Wayne Dukes has suggested a small rollback in the proposed property tax rate for the 2017-18 fiscal year and proposes that it be equally shared by the county's operations and the sheriff.

    Art teacher’s work published in book: Sheryl Depp of Spring Hill was one of 40 art teachers from all over the world whose artwork was included in the newest book from Firehouse Publications, If Picasso Went on Vacation. The book is an inter-curricular collection of poems and illustrations, the result of combining art with history, geography, international languages and rhyme. The book aims to teach youngsters about art and art history from the Renaissance to the present day. The teachers were asked to learn about the life and work of an artist, then create a work of art of a famous landmark that the artist might have made. Depp, who teaches at Shady Hills Elementary School, did a work titled Victoria Falls, based on the artist George Braque.
