John Kelly said Frederica Wilson took credit for getting funding for an FBI building. Video of Wilson’s speech shows otherwise.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly Thursday criticized Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami for taking credit for securing funding for the Miramar FBI building in 2015.

“A congresswoman stood up, and in a long tradition of empty barrels making the most noise, stood up there in all of that and talked about how she was instrumental in getting the funding for that building,” Kelly said in the daily press briefing.

Except video of Wilson’s speech at the dedication of the building shows she said no such thing.

(Update: 4:45 Sunday — A reader made the good point that the video begins in the middle of Rep. Wilson’s speech. She appears to begin her talk by praising the work of her Congressional colleagues. Given the evidence it is technically possible that Wilson bragged about getting the building funded as Kelly said. However, considering the building was funded years before Wilson was elected to Congress and the Miami Herald interviewed another person, Miramar mayor Wayne Messam, who spoke at the event and he says she did no such bragging, it seems unlikely.)

Wilson, who has disputed Kelly’s account of her speech, posted a celebratory tweet when the video surfaced.

The Sun Sentinel, which found the video, has the story here.
