President Trump introdues Gov. Rick Scott at a White House event Wednesday

WASHINGTON - As the group walked out of the Roosevelt Room, President Donald Trump pulled Gov. Rick Scott close and said something into his ear. Whatever it was, the scene punctuated how chummy the two have become — and how Scott is placing 2018 Senate hopes on a relationship with the White House.

The Veterans health bill signing Scott attended served that purpose. It’s an important issue, though the bill was merely an extension of an existing program. Politically Scott’s attendance served as a vehicle for him to yet again transmit signals back home that he’s a player.

Scott later announced that he’d secured a commitment from Trump to obtain funding for the Hoover Dike project. He grabbed some airtime on Fox News as well.

It was the second time in recent days that Scott’s touted insider connections, having previously announced Florida will receive $1.5 billion in Medicaid money to cover the poor. “It is great to have a partner in Washington who is willing to work with us to help our state,” Scott said then.

That partner carries risks.

Trump’s approval rating remains low and he’s yet to deliver on many key campaign promises, including get rid of Obamacare. If Trump hasn’t turned things around by next year, Scott could face a liability in an expected showdown with Sen. Bill Nelson.
