Rough Translation

Many Americans live in a cultural bubble, not fully aware of many other societies around the world.

NPR's new podcast aims to take listeners out of those bubbles and explore how current events play out in places other than the United States.

Each week, Rough Translation's Gregory Warner takes listeners to a new country to "hear a story that says something about what's happening in the United States." The first episode explores Brazil, where two radically different ways of seeing race collide. It prompts many Brazilians to ask the questions, "Who is black?" and "Who is not black enough?"

Another explores how Ukraine has been dealing with fake news out of Russia, which sparked a real war. The episode reveals tips for ways the U.S. could combat its own fake news epidemic.

And the most recent episode delves into what really happened when the news spread worldwide that hundreds of women were raped in a Congolese village. The episode explores how Western societies have for years tried to combat the rise of rape in Congo, but Congolese women say aid workers only want to hear one story.

Warner isn't the only host of the weekly podcast. Rough Translation also features stories from correspondents in 17 international bureaus. Episode drop every Monday.

Listen on iTunes, Stitcher and npr.org.
