America's Got Talent winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. arrested on domestic assault charge
America's Got Talent winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. was arrested Monday on charges of domestic battery and domestic assault.
According to the Charleston Gazette-Mail, the jazz singer was arrested in West Virginia after allegedly hitting a woman in the face with a golf club. He was later released from jail on a $3,500 bond.
Murphy, 42, gave his own statement, saying the woman was his girlfriend and claimed she attacked him first with a golf club and knife after a verbal argument over his house being "trashed" by a party she hosted.
TMZ reported that the arrest occured after Murphy and the woman got in an argument over their 6-month-old child.
"In defending myself, she obtained some bruises and swelling on her face," he said in the statement. "I did not strike her."
"I was raised to respect women, and if not provoked and feeling I was in danger, I would never have defended myself in this manner. I am very sorry for the way domestic incident was handled. I apologize to my fans everywhere and to the people of Logan County and West Virginia for this incident. It should never have happened," he said.
Murphy was the Season 6 winner of the talent competition.
