Jason Licht: Jameis Winston could be out an extended period of time

Quarterback Jameis Winston will miss the Jets and Dolphins games with a shoulder injury but there is no timeline for his return, meaning he could be out for "an extended period," general manager Jason Licht said Sunday.

Winston saw his streak of 40 consecutive starts to begin his NFL career end Sunday when he was held out in favor of Ryan Fitzpatrick against the Jets.

Licht said Winston has no new structural damage to his shoulder, which was originally diagnosed as an AC joint sprain. He visited orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday.

But the Bucs were 2-6 entering Sunday's game, and Licht said the importance of Winston to their future means the team will be cautious.

"We're going to give it two weeks here to see how things settle down but there is no time line on this," Licht said during the Bucs pre-game radio show. "This may be an extended period. There's no new information. It's still the same injury that we've diagnosed and had all of our doctors that do a great job with it. But this could be an extended situation. What is best for our future, because he is our future and we're going to make the best decisions we can medically to ensure that he is our future."

Licht gushed about the toughness Winston has demonstrated during the injury. The Bucs are 0-4 since Winston became hurt in the first half of a 38-33 loss at Arizona in Week 5.

"First time in his career that he's going to be missing a game and that he's dealt with this," Licht said. "The pain afflicted with this injury, you know, he's going to get better because of this, this adversity that he's going through right now is only going to make him better. Now, this is a tough call. This is a medical call we had to make. If it's up to Jameis, Jameis would play with no arm. He's an extreme competitor. I mean, I've never been around a guy like this guy.  He can deal with more pain than most people. But medically, it was the decision we had to make."
