I can’t go for that: New John Oates memoir full of shockers

What’s more bizarre: That John Oates (of Hall & Oates, of course) once had just $50 to his name in the late ‘80s? Or that he was friends with gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson

Those are just two revelations contacted in Oates’ new memoir entitled Change of Seasons, which was just reviewed by the New York Daily News

Oates is on the eve of a summer tour with partner Daryl Hall and the boys from Tears for Fears, so the timing of the book is pretty sweet.

According to the Daily News, the guitarist reveals he got a call from his accountant in 1987 revealing he was nearly broke (this despite owning two NYC apartments, a house in Connecticut, an Aspen condo and a fleet of other boy toys.)

Still, he takes it all pretty well.

“I just wish they’d warned us that the high life we were living would have financial consequences,” he writes. “We weren’t cheated; we were seduced.”

As for Hunter S. Thompson, it turns out Oates was his closest neighbor in Colorado for the last 10 years of Thompson’s life.

“When you were with him, one on one — and if he liked you — he was a very gracious, Southern gentleman,” Oates told the Las Vegas Review-Journal back in 2013. “When he went out in public, he did his thing with the glass of whiskey, the cigarette holder and the whole routine.”

Change of Seasons is due out on March 28
